Jacobs Farm

Large format photos

These photos are taken by a Linhof camera with wide-angle lens. The negatives are 4 x 5 inches and capture incredible detail. The camera belonged to my husband’s grandfather and was in our attic for many years before my interest in photography drew me to it. It took me more than a year to be able to take photographs with it successfully. Set-up for a photo takes me at least a half hour, starting with inserting a single sheet of film into a film holder, setting up tripod, choosing aperture and shutter speed, checking focus. I go under a black cloth to view the image, which is upside down and backwards! The process makes me slow down, look at everything carefully, and be in a different relationship with what I’m viewing. This is photography as meditation.
